TEACHING

COLLEGE TEACHING

I am currently on the trombone faculties at:

Each institution offers unique curricula and opportunities, so prospective students are encouraged to explore each program in detail. My studios are open to students at every degree level offered by each school.

PRIVATE INSTRUCTION

I teach private lessons in person and via Zoom or similar video conferencing platforms. Please reach out to me via the contact form to schedule a lesson with me.

GUEST APPEARANCES

Please contact me to arrange a masterclass, recital, lecture, guest artist appearance, or if you have any questions or would like more information.

NOTE: At least 3 months’ notice is required to schedule a full recital. More time is preferred if it is requested that I perform a new work.

LESSON INFORMATION

I offer private lessons to trombone and euphonium/baritone players of every skill level, from beginners to professionals. I accept other brass students as well, but it is not my specialty.

Some things to know about lessons with me:

  • Personalized instruction. The lesson format and playing materials/techniques we will cover in a lesson are tailored to each student’s needs.

  • Repertoire of your choice. Bring whatever rep you’d like to work on, something that’s giving you trouble, or come with particular playing techniques or concepts in mind that you’d like to discuss or work through.

  • Classical and jazz/commercial students welcome. My expertise is primarily in classical playing, but I have 4 years of jazz training and some experience with professional commercial groups.

  • In-person and Zoom lessons. Lesson types and locations are to be set based on mutual convenience and preference, and is subject to change.

  • Lesson rates vary. Lesson rates will be set after an email consultation, and depend on the length of the lesson, travel time, and number of lessons scheduled.

  • 30-90 minute lessons. Lessons may be booked in time slots ranging from 30 to 90 minutes. A standard lesson is generally 60 minutes long, but advanced players are encouraged to book 90-minute sessions so we can really dig into the material.

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

My objective as a teacher is to encourage my students to be savvy, independent thinkers who are able to interpret instruction from any teacher—no matter how renowned or successful—in a way that is conducive to their own musical growth, not automatic compliance with the commands of an authority figure.

I feel that my job as an educator is to meet each student where they are and guide them through a collaborative process in which we highlight, reinforce, and expand upon their strengths; identify areas that need improvement; and learn to develop appropriate and practical solutions that work with each person’s unique needs, abilities, body, and repertoire. I do not have a pro- or anti- stance regarding any techniques (buzzing, wrist motion, vibrato, etc.) because each student is different, and what works well for one student is certainly not appropriate for all.

This collaborative, personalized, and analytical approach to teaching not only helps my students improve their playing and develop the skills they need to advance their careers, but it encourages them to always take an active role in their own education and musical development. It is my goal that over time my students gain the knowledge and experience they need to quickly diagnose their own playing issues and find thoughtful, productive solutions that maximize practice efficiency and continue to inspire progress as they eventually transition out of my studio and into their own careers.

If you’d like to schedule a lesson, send me a message!

Let me know a bit about yourself, if there’s anything in particular you’d like to work on, and when you’d like to meet up. My schedule varies quite a bit depending on the time of year, so it’s best if you contact me well in advance and offer a range of dates.
